IIT J.A.B s ministry move to increase number of attempts for SC or ST students at JEE
The latest development from the
elite
IITs
Joint Admission Board
offers a glimmer of hope for deserving students from across the
country.
The Joint Admission Board [J.A.B] which is the highest authority on Admission guidelines for the Indian Institutes of Technology, has rejected the Ministry of Human Resources move which aimed to allow SC/ST students more number of attempts at the IIT's Joint Entrance Exam. The J.A.B decision is said to have been made in the light of other recent developments which have resulted in an increase in the quota for SC/ST and OBC students. At present, all students including SC/ST/OBC candidates can attempt the IIT's JEE only 2 times. The J.A.B clearly does not see any need to relax rules further to meet the whims and fancies of the HRD Ministry. The HRD ministry's move to increase the number of attempts SC/ST/OBC students are alllowed at JEE was rejected by the J.A.B on the basis that it was presently not required as such students are already being given preferential treatment with relaxed cut-off's in JEE for entry into the Nation's premier Engineering institution.
To ensure that such students with lower levels of competence can cope with the cutting edge courses offered at the IITs, the IIT's also conduct special preparatory classes for students who have gained admission based on relaxed cut-off scores. JEE 2009 admission lists will be drawn on the basis of quotas brought into effect during the last year after much debate, Meaning Deserving candidates who have actually made the cut may lose out on their IIT dream due to the higher number of seats reserved for the various caste based quotas. With a chunky pie of the seat matrix already within the grasp of less meritorious students belonging to SC/ST/OBC categories, this J.A.B refusal to relax rules further for such students implies that the elite group of institutions does not want to compromise much more on Merit than it has already had to over the past year.
