Anthropology is the study of history of evolution of human beings. Anthropologists study the language, traditions, beliefs, possessions, and values of people in various parts of the world and formulate hypotheses to explain their research and findings. They generally specialize in physical anthropology, archaeology, linguistics, or cultural anthropology. Physical anthropologists attempt to understand the physical or biological development of the human species. Archaeologist examine physical objects, such as tools, clothing, homes, and art left from past human cultures. Linguistic anthropologists study the evolution of languages and their relation to one another, while cultural anthropologists study the customs and cultures of living people. Social problems like birth control, labor unrest, juvenile delinquency, mortality rate can be dealt with the help of information gathered from anthropological studies.
Courses and eligibility:
Minimum qualification for the bachelor's programme in anthropology is 10+2 pass in any stream. Candidates who have completed their graduation can pursue the master's programme, who in turn can opt for further studies by applying for M.Phl and Ph.D programmes. A Ph.D degree is imperative for a candidate who wishes to join any international development agencies as an advisor.
Most anthropologists work in colleges and universities, where they teach and engage in research. Government agencies employ a few anthropologists, usually in museums, national parks and technical aid programs. International agencies like WHO, UNESCO and UNICEF also recruit sevral anthropologists to conduct research activities. These professionals may also be employed as curators, linguists and social workers in media houses, publishing houses and NGOs. Anthropologists also find employment in forensic science departments and criminal investigation departments. They are sometimes deployed at the archaeological sites to supervise research teams.
