The growth and expansion of corporate sector due to liberalization and globalization has resulted growth in demand for specialists in almost every sphere. Company Secretary is such a specialized professional. A company secretary is one who is responsible for efficient management of the corporate sector and act as an advisor in legal matter. He/she co-ordinates various departments of the organization, ensures compliance of company legislation and advises directors on statutory requirements of the company. Apart from this, he/she also looks after finance, accounts, legal, personnel and administrative functions.

The idea of keeping a Company Secretary may vary from company to company but the knowledge and training acquired by company secretaries make them versatile leader to carry out various responsibilities. Looking into the details of processing applications for management appointments and their remuneration is the responsibility of a Company Secretary.

In handling finance responsibilities would include getting project approvals, obtaining relevant licenses and permits, zeroing in on all requirements under the MRTP (Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Act) and FERA (Foreign Exchange Regulation Act) and any other relevant legislation. The Company secretary is authorized to sign the annual returns of the company, as also represents the company when a situation demands it.

Eligibility: -

If you have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination enroll yourself with the institute for foundation course. After passing the foundation examination register with the institute for intermediate course. Those who have done their graduation can enroll into executive programme or intermediate course. Once done with intermediate course one can go for professional programme or final course.

During this period the student is also required to undergo management training with a company recognized by the Institute or with a recognized practicing Company Secretary. The duration of the training may vary from a year or two, depending upon whether it is done on a full time or part time basis.



Job Prospects: -

Today's global scene shows a focus on the development of the corporate sector. Growth automatically translates into the involvement legalities of various kinds. And this falls under the purview of a Company Secretary. Companies need advice from a person with a thorough knowledge of all relevant laws and who else can perform the best other than company secretary. So the employment potential in the corporate sector is very high.

Openings are also available in government sectors, in bodies like the Bureau of Public Enterprises, government financial institutions and stock exchanges. Other government openings are the Accounts branch of the Central Government Law Services; the finance, law, accounts and merchant banking divisions of nationalized banks. A combination of experience and expertise can lead to appointment at top-level positions like chairman, directors and managing director, in reputed organizations.

Remuneration: -

Company Secretary ship is a well remunerated career option because of its multifaceted nature. For those who are employed in public and private sector should expect 10000 to 15000 per month at junior level and 30000 to 35000 at senior level. Company secretaries preferring foreign companies can have even higher. Besides this privately practicing C.S are also getting good returns depending upon numbers of clients they have.
