NIIT to administer Common Admission Test CAT 2009

According to reports in a leading newspaper,  NIIT - a global leader in computer education will be handling the infrastructural and administrative needs for CAT 2009 which is expected to be the largest computer based test in India so far with more than 3 lakh aspirants expected to take the MBA entrance test to make it into the prestigious Indian Institutes of Management - IIMs.

US-based Prometric, the world’s largest computer-based testing service provider that is conducting the
Common Admission Test (CAT) this year has closed a deal with NIIT for Rs. Rs 50-55 crore to administer the test across 200 test centers throughout India.

NIIT has tie-ups with private colleges having at least 100-computers each for being selected as CAT 2009 test centers.

The test centers will be responsible for providing tight security check measures which will include:
  • Closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to record all the movements of every applicant.
  • Matching fingerprints and photo identification check
  • Metal detectors
Test Centers will also provide computers, internet connection, image capture cameras, back-up generators and UPS.

NIIT will provide identity cards, biometric equipment and other stationery. Highlights of arrangements at test centers are:
  • Every test room at the testing centre will have a maximum of 50 computers .
  • A 512-kbps internet speed per testing room of 50 computers for servers and administration machines would be provided by the college.
  • There will be monitor separators to ensure no candidate can view anybody else’s computer screen.
Test administration Personnel deployed by the college during the test will also be pre-verified by NIIT.

CAT 2009 will be held over a time span of 10 days between November 28th and December 7th with two sessions each day. Online registration for the test begins on September 9th through Scratch Vouchers which will have to be purchased at particular Axis bank branches all over India. CAT 2009 Registration process will have to be completed online within 1st October.
