Gone are the days when class XI students switching to different stream after the board exam Results were asked by the schools to buy new textbooks and pay the fee again.

The CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) in its recent circular has refrained schools from charging any additional fees from class XI students changing their streams. Moreover, schools will have to bear the charges of buying new textbooks.

Academic session in CBSE schools generally begins in April. After summer vacations in May, classes resume in June. Provisional admission for class XI is however made in April and the confirmation for the choice of stream is done only after the Class X Board examination Results are declared.

Though it depends on the choice of students which stream to opt for, admission to science stream will only be provided if the school finds them capable of performing fair in science subjects. Students’ capability will be evaluated based on their class X performance throughout.

This implies that a high scorer until the model examination can be told to switch streams. However, some schools may ask those students after the declaration of class X board exam results- who were taking classes in commerce section till April end to opt for science stream in June.

For such students, board has asked schools to provide special coachings to the students to help them manage without taking any additional fee. The circular has also asked schools to consider the students’ attendance in April as well. Students’ marks in class test 1 and 2 will also be taken into account and a logical relaxation can be provided to the student who would have not attended classes for first few weeks.
