AIMA opposes CMAT online test
The All India Management Association (AIMA) has opposed the Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) declared by the Centre for admission to all management programs in India. AIMA has been conducting Management Aptitude Test (MAT) for the last 2 decades and has described CMAT to be discriminatory.
AIMA has written a letter to the Human Resource Development Ministry in which it has described the uniqueness and comprehensiveness of MAT exam which has made it a great success in India. AIMA claimed that MAT exam is conducted both online as well as in paper pencil based format. As a result, more number of students belonging to different educational backgrounds can take the test easily.
AIMA threw light on the fact that the proposal to launch and conduct CMAT only in computer based format is inappropriate for a vast and diverse country such as India.
However, AIMA proposed in the latter that this option can prove to be a good alternative for elite tests such as CAT which mainly target students residing in metros, who are interested in joining institutes such as Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) although again conducting a common entrance exam only through an online medium would only widen the digital gap.
Numerous students expected to take this test would belong to tier 2 and 3 cities, having limited access to computers, internet connections and bandwidth. A computer based format will restrict many students from non metros and less connected areas from taking this test. As a result, instead of increasing the scope of admission in management courses for students, it would only increase economic discrimination.
AIMA also quoted an example of the AIEEE 2011 test where only 4,900 students had opted for online test out of 11 lakh candidates, which clearly exhibits that though more and more students are gradually becoming computer literates, demographic inequality still persists in terms of computer literacy in India.
