40,000 engineering seats may remain vacant in Maharashtra
This year about 40,000 seats are expected to go vacant in engineering colleges in Maharashtra defeating the objective of holding an entrance exam. The number of engineering seats available in Maharashtra is far more than the engineering applicants due to which most colleges are having a tough time in filling up the seats.
Nearly 2.8 lakh candidates had taken the engineering subjects (mathematics, physics and chemistry) in MHT-CET in 2012. But only 1.2 lakh applicants registered for the engineering colleges while the state has 1.48 lakh seats in 363 engineering colleges. As per the sources from DTE (Directorate of Technical Education), the number of seats may rise by a minimum of 5% under TFWS (tuition fee waiver scheme).
In 2011, around 1.04 lakh students registered against 1.4 lakh engineering seats available.
The last date to apply was June 28, 2012. The date was extended by 2 days to help those students who could not get the required documents. Though, the number of candidates registering increased only by a few thousands in 2 days. After the TFWS seats are counted the number of vacant seats may rise to 40,000.
Mostly the seats in engineering colleges located in remote areas such as Marathwada, Jalgaon, Nagpur and Vidharbha have gone vacant. However, the situation is much better in Pune and Mumbai but the colleges here too faced problems in filling seats in courses such as chemical, IT, textile engineering and production. In 2011 about 35000 seats in engineering colleges were left vacant. To fill the seats AICTE had decreased the eligibility condition for technical/engineering courses from 50% in Std. XII (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) to 45% for general category students.
While numerous seats including Maharashtra have requested AICTE in written to not to approve proposal for new colleges, nearly 15 new colleges have been given approval this year.
