Automobile engineering, also known as automotive engineering or vehicle engineering, deals with the designing, manufacturing, testing and operation of automobiles like bikes, cars, buses etc. The role of an automobile engineer is to design, test and develop vehicles and components from concept stage through to production stage and then even tweak the vehicles in response to customers' feedback. In compliance to the growing demand for exotic vehicles & automobiles in India, many international automobile giants are investing heavily, creating a whale of opportunities for the dexterous individuals. Automobile Engineers are mainly classified into three streams like Product or Design Engineers, Development Engineers and Manufacturing Engineers. Nature of the job requires a lot of determination, dedication and hard work.

Eligibility:

The minimum eligibility criterion for admission in a diploma or degree course is 50% in Physics, Chemistry and Math’s. For postgraduate course i.e. M.E/M.Tech , one should posses a B.E/B.TECH degree. The four-year B.E/B.TECH automobile engineering course is also including robotics as a part of the curriculum which would create more avenues in one's career.

Career Prospects:

An automobile engineer can work in automobile manufacturing industries, defense services, service stations etc. Many automobile companies like TELCO, Bajaj Auto, L & T, Mahindra & Mahindra, Gabrial, Heldex India, Ashok leyland are recruiting students in campus drive from many top colleges and universities. Self-employment is also possible in setting up automobile garages or maintenance of workshops. One can also join as a part time or full time lecturer or professor in engineering colleges/universities in India and abroad after completing MTech and PhD programs. Indian engineers are of great demand in foreign countries, especially the Middle East.

Remuneration:

Remuneration in this field, solely depends on the type and size of the organization one is employed. A fresher can expect a starting salary of Rs 10000 to Rs 15000 per month. An automobile engineer can take home a sum of Rs. 25000 to Rs. 35000 within a few years of experience.
