Union HRD minister, Kapil Sibal on July 5, 2012 stated that it will take around 4 years for CET (Common Entrance Test) for admission to engineering and medical colleges to be implemented in all states across the country.

He expressed, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has assured that the state would adopt CET in 2014.

CET aims at reducing multiplicity of exams and discouraging the trend of coaching institutes. Coaching institutes are earning a turnover of Rs 15,000 to Rs 20, crore. This can be discouraged if schools only test a child based on what is being taught.

CET would also help in eliminating the practice of capitation fee charged by some private colleges as test would be applicable to both private and government institutes.
