The Orissa high court on July 26, 2012 passed a stay order on admission process going on at NIT, Rourkela. This comes in the wake of petitions filed challenging the new selection norms given by the Central Counseling Board (CCB).

The counsel for a petitioner stated that the admission norm came randomly, is confusing and ignores major criteria’s such as merit and preference that were considered while the state quotas were implemented in NITs. The norms also breach Supreme Court order passed earlier on similar issues.

Most of the parents and students across the state have resented against the new CCB guideline on the basis of which enrollment from AIEEE rank list to NITs and other colleges are going on currently. Many have appealed in the high court. Suspicion were raised on the new guidelines as they were announced only a day before the candidates were told to enter their online choices of college and subject stream.

Students are claiming that the system failed to maintain transparency and clarity in admission process for the benefit of renowned coaching institutes. AIEEE rank list shows that most of the qualified students belong to few states as quality of teaching to crack national level entrance exams differs across all states and specifically only few parents can afford big coaching institutes.

It is also expected that changes in the admission norm may leave plenty of seat vacant in NITs situated in troubled states.
