The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) – Kanpur was one of the first IITs to reject the HRD Minister, Kapil Sibal’s proposal of conducting a common entrance test for admission to all the engineering colleges from 2013 and take its decision of conducting its own entrance exam in the future.

On June 27, 2012 during a meeting between the IIT Council and the Government, a compromise decision was reached for conducting the CET in 2013 where only the top 20 percentile of students from each board will qualify for admission to the prestigious IITs. This compromise caters to both the IITs and the Government’s demands. IIT- Kanpur was represented by its Director – Prof SG Dhande at this meeting.

After this compromise was reached, the IIT-Kanpur senate is currently reconsidering their decision of conducting their own entrance exam. Sources from IIT-Kanpur faculty forum revealed that the senate will take a decision on what is to be done next after this new development.
