Students and parents attending the orientation day at the Indian Institute of Technology – Madras (IITM) gathered in a large hall at the institute with a sense of excitement and anxiety. The director of the institute put them at ease in his address, which was a mix of English and Hindi. He mentioned about the various support systems that would help in the students’ overall growth. A senior professor from the institute stood next to him translating his speech into Telugu, to help a large part of the audience who were from Andhra Pradesh to understand better.
The IITs can serve as a model to other institutes not only in terms of technical research and training but also due to their orientation methods. The director also advised the parents to stay in constant touch with their wards.
Over the course of the orientation week, the freshers will be shown around the campus and introduced to seniors, faculty members and counselors. This will be followed by refresher sessions in the basic concepts of mathematics and science.
Senior professors advised the students to come out of the ‘JEE Addiction’. He told the students that they will have to write detailed answers and explain every step clearly. The teaching method of the institute is far different from that of the coaching institutes and students should focus on their academics till they get used to this new method. The students were also told to place academics before their other interests.
