The date for JEE-Mains was decided by the Centrally funded engineering institutes, CBSE and representatives from IIT in a meeting held on August 25, 2012.

The CBSE, representatives from IITs and Centrally funded engineering institutes will conduct the JEE-Mains on April 7, 2013 while JAB and Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) will hold the JEE-Advanced on June 2, 2013. The JIC and JAB will also synchronize with the conducting body of JEE Mains. However, CBSE will provide the logistics for JEE-Advanced to be held under the supervision of IIT-Delhi.

JEE-Advanced will be held in two shifts similar to the pattern of IITJEE 2012. The paper will have a mix of objective and subjective questions from Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics and each paper will be of 3 hours duration. Candidates aspiring for IITs, ISM Dhanbad, IT BHU will be required to clear JEE-Mains and appear for JEE-Advanced provided they fall in the top 20 percentile bracket. The students who fail to make it to IITs will be eligible for admission to IIITs, NITs and other Centrally funded engineering institutes. Various states may also use the scores of JEE main/JEE Advanced for admission to engineering courses in their colleges. Deemed universities have already approved the JEE 2013.
