Vacant engineering seats continue to increase in Tamil Nadu
With only 10 days left for the engineering counseling to finish, over 100 engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu could fill hardly 10 seats till now. Private colleges are still left with over 95,000 vacant seats to be filled, indicating high supply over the demand this year.
About 57 colleges could not admit a single student in electronics and communication engineering while electronics engineering seats in 129 colleges have gone vacant. No IT seat has been taken in about 95 colleges while 67 colleges could not find any takers for computer science branch. Atleast two branches – material science and technology and industrial engineering and management reported zero admissions.
Experts have predicted that nearly 60,000 to 65,000 government seats will go vacant this year and about 90,000 seats will be left vacant by the end of 2012 admission season. The current counseling absentee rate is 27.71% with an average of 23.53%.
Parents and students have become brand conscious and seek quality education. Government aided colleges have filled 8 seats including 1 seat each reserved for SC Arundathiar students and 6 for ST students. The university departments and affiliated colleges reported over 1000 vacant seats.
To attract students, private colleges are investing huge amounts on freebies and advertisements. They are even offering incentives and requesting the school teachers and principals to promote their college to the Class XII pass outs. Some colleges are also offering tuition fee waiver for students with low cut-offs while some are reimbursing the processing fee of RS 5000 paid by the students to attend the counseling if they chose their college.
Instead these colleges should focus on improving the quality of facilities and teaching standards so that their placement rate increases which will ultimately attract students.
