It is needless to say that in our country, where textile and garment industries have been thriving for ages, the recent boom in fashion designing has led to innovation and new prospects in the existing domain of garment and accessory design. If you have a penchant for creativity, style and originality, a career in fashion designing can be perfect for you. Therefore, if you can create magic with colors, designs and shapes, just acquire apt professional skills to begin a successful career in Fashion Designing, says Pankaj Barnwal, a Freelance Fashion Designer & Entrepreneur, Guwahati, Assam

Q. As a designer what are your plans ahead? Why you have pursued this career?
I always wanted to promote my brand nationally and am planning to open a company next year along with two of my partners that will promote fashion and culture of Assam on a national scale. It is in the planning stage and we are planning for mid next year launch. To create something new has always fascinated me and also the dress people wear, so I mixed both and chose it as a career.

Q. Tell us about the prospects on completing a course in fashion designing.
Well once the course is complete, one can start his/her own boutique or can choose to work with some designer as an intern for few years and then go for his/her own line. One can even choose to be a designer in some apparel firm or be an entrepreneur (like me).
Q. What are the best institutes that an aspirant should target?
One can always go to NIFT (through entrance) but there are many other good institutes like Vogue, Pearl (Delhi), JD institute... These are good institutes.
Q. What is the specialization and aspects in the course of fashion designing?
Now-a-days institutes are offering many specialization courses like pattern making, styling, costume designing, women wear, and men’s wear. Few institutes even offer Merchandising as specialization. So, it's a vast field.
Q. Apart from creativity, what is the quotient that is required to become successful in the field of fashion?
Creativity is not the only thing that is required, one has to be aware of the changes in everyday fashion, understanding of colors is very important. One has to understand the mindset of customer and has to identify his/her needs. Patience is also very important.
Q. How can we determine the rate of success in this field?
I don't think anyone can determine that at least not in this field, because there is always a new challenge.
