NIIT to set up 1500 Yuva Jyoti Centers
NIIT limited, forming a joint venture - NIIT Yuva Jyoti Limited (NYJL) and the National Skills Development Council ventured into skills training for the blue collared workers.
NIIT will set up about 1500 NIIT Yuva Jyoti Centres, across 1000 cities, with an expenditure of Rs 377 crore for four years, out of which Rs 178 crore will be contributed as a loan by the NSDC, a not-for-profit company set up by the Ministry of Finance. NSDC will take 10% stake in the joint venture for Rs 100 crore.
This initiative is aimed at training the semi or low skilled people for sectors such as retail, auto, hospitality, banks, IT and BPO industry. These courses train people to take up positions such as retail executive in a mall, or a supervisor in an auto factory, or a delivery executive for a fast food joint. Duration of course would vary from three to six months.
India is expected to have an incremental requirement of 24.4 crore skilled people by 2022 in 21 high growth sectors. The government is targeting to train 50 crore people by 2022 to meet the global skills shortage, as part of NSDC.
Both NIIT and NSDC aim to train around 70 lakh youth by 2022. The JV is expected to establish a 'skills inventory' of around 2.6 crore youth in next ten years.
