An Interview with Dr Devi Singh Director IIM Lucknow
Q. Briefly tell us about IIM Lucknow and its success stories?
From a modest beginning in 1984, Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow (IIML), has now grown into a fully integrated global management school. The guiding philosophy of the school, throughout, has been creation of knowledge, influencing management practices and integrate globally. The objectives of imparting education, combined with creation, dissemination and application of knowledge, are being met in an integrated form, to create a synergistic impact. Each member of IIM Lucknow community strives to achieve excellence in every endeavour – be it education, research, consulting or training – by making continuous improvements in curricula and pedagogical tools. On the academic front, Students Intake in our Post Graduate Programme has increased from 240 in 2004 to 374 in 2009. This is the highest amongst all IIMs. Similarly, intake in Fellow Program in Management has almost doubled in last four years. IIM Lucknow also established its PGP- Agribusiness Management facility at Lucknow campus in 2005. There has been consistent increase in number of International papers published, number of Research papers, Conference paper presented in India and abroad, cases, and number of books published. Revenues from MDPs have gone up more than three times. Today, IIM Lucknow has international partnerships with 22 Business Schools in 11 countries. IIM Lucknow is the first IIM to start an additional campus in the country - and that has been in operation at NOIDA for the past three years. Our NOIDA campus is completely dedicated to executive education. IIM Lucknow undertakes probably the largest numbers of Government and PSU MDP's amongst all IIMs. Q. What are the courses offered under MBA channel? The courses offered under MBA channel at IIM Lucknow are Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGPM), Post Graduate Programme in Agribusiness Management (PGPABM), Post Graduate Programme in Business Management for Working Managers (WMP). The PGPM and the PGPABM, offered by the Institute subject the students to an overall transformation, training them to be better managers and better human beings. The rigorous syllabi not only instill, in them, a passion for knowledge but also attempt to teach them how to apply that knowledge to real-life situations. The programmes lay emphasis on well-rounded personality development of the students and also in inculcating the values of teamwork and integrity in them. Our WMP is a uniquely designed three year evening programme for working executives, entrepreneurs and professionals who have a desire to enhance their knowledge and skills in a formal setting while continuing to be engaged in their ongoing professions/businesses. The programme is especially structured to meet learning aspirations of enthusiastic and bright executives and will inculcate in them strong conceptual fundamentals and skills required to manage businesses of the future. We also run a one year International Programme in Management for Executives (IPMX), a fully residential global programme for mid-career executives. A unique part of IPMX is a semester spent at McGill University, Canada.  Q. Tell us about the admission process at IIM Lucknow. The Post Graduate programme aims at providing educational facilities to train young men and women for careers in management, primarily in the corporate sector. Admissions are held through the Combined Admission Test (CAT) to the two-year full-time course leading to the award of Postgraduate Diploma in Management, equivalent to a Master's degree in Business Management. For WMP, the students have to go through a competitive written examination, conducted by IIM Lucknow. The short-listed candidates then have to go through a group discussion and personal interview. For IPMX, we take the GMAT scores followed by GD & interview. Q. What is the fee structure like? The fee for our two year Postgraduate programme in management is Rs. 8 lakhs. For WMP, the total annual fee is Rs. One lakh thirty five thousand (i.e. Rs.1,35,000/-). The IPMX fee is INR 14,00,000 (USD 40,000) which includes tuition, cost of course material, library and computer facilities, accommodation and mess charges at the Noida Campus. Q. Tell us about you faculty and alumni. The role of a teacher is not simply to bestow knowledge - it is to help the student seek even more learning. The faculty of IIM Lucknow is composed of distinguished and experienced professors from various walks of life. With many years of industry experience, and a high standing amongst their peers, the faculty of IIM Lucknow act as facilitators in a student's learning process.The high number of research papers written by them, and the continual consultancy assignments they take up is but a small indication of the desire of the faculty to excel, not only for themselves, but also for those whose talents and gifts they nurture and guide. IIM Lucknow alumni numbering more than 3000 now are working at all levels in myriad organizations across the globe. The IIML Alumni Association works with two primary objectives: using the collective experience and knowledge of its members for the benefit of the IIML community, and developing initiatives to assist its members in achieving their objectives. Q. What kind of background and profile does your institute look for in new students? The students coming at IIM Lucknow are from all walks of life. The students' background varies from engineering to science and commerce to arts. The current batch of IIM Lucknow PGP course has around 93.33% of students with work experience, which is highest till now at IIM Lucknow. IIM Lucknow encourages students with prior work experience as they can relate theory to practice better and can contribute to peer learning in great way. Q. Is there any sector of function specific focus while targeting companies for placement? It is now 25 years since IIM Lucknow embarked on a mission to fulfil the need for quality manpower among the top business recruiters. And year after year, it has lived up to the challenges and expectations of recruiters thronging its campus. The institute places special emphasis on inculcating corporate values and skills required for complex decision-making, besides developing superior expertise on functional domains and garnering business knowledge. Students from IIM Lucknow today serve with distinction in senior business positions across the world. Q. Does your institute offer scholarships or loans? In order to provide financial support to the needy and meritorious students, IIM Lucknow continues to offer a large number of Scholarships. During the year 2007-08, 28.8 lakhs rupees worth of need-based scholarships were disbursed among 46 students. Q. Does it offer Distance MBA programme? What specializations are allowed? Ans: IIM Lucknow does not offer Distance MBA programme. Q. What are future plans for the institute? The future plans for the institute are: Faculty development: An increase in faculty with the increase in the students is a given, but where does one get the requisite faculty from? We have taken the lead in creating a very robust fellowship programme and have the largest number of Research Scholars amongst all Business schools. • We will look at forging synergistic alliances with top global brands. • We propose to optimally utilize the Noida campus, which has been specially created for providing excellence in executive education. We plan to make the NOIDA campus a hub for executive training in the global context and also training of the policy makers and maybe even the parliamentarians, going forward. • Creating two new centers of excellence at IIM Lucknow for environment and sustainable development & policy research • Increasing interaction and exchange programmes with top business schools globally, which are industry leaders in the global arena. • Focus on research by offering more facilities and grants to the faculty.
