Nafeesha - A very warm welcome to Mr. Raj Joshi of IMS. Raj sir its great to have you here. Dear friends please address all you questions to Raj sir.

Raj Joshi: IMS India - Hi All, I am ready to take your questions.

Sumit - can you tell me some topics which can be asked in GD?

Raj Joshi: IMS India - GD topics are specific to certain Institutes they are further classified into Factual, Controversial, case based and others. GD is conducted to know a student's knowledge and his patience is tested in a group.

Neha - sir I have applied for FORE, UBS and LBS. what kind of topics one gets over there?

Raj Joshi: IMS India - Topics are mostly Factual of abstract for the above B - Schools that you mentioned.

Nipun - sir in GD the main thing is that one has to speak. So my question is if GD is going on then can we start talking in Hindi or not?

Raj Joshi: IMS India - There is not thumb rule for it. However one can start with the name of the topic and support it by proverbs both in Hindi or English so that's ok...

Neha - sir can you tell me some Factual and abstract topics for GD?

Raj Joshi: IMS India - Here are a few topics: Is China a threat to India? China the new age super power? the face of International Terrorism? These can be some likely topics.

Sumit - some basic tips to keep in mind while going in to a GD?

Raj Joshi: IMS India - A GD is conducted to test your performance in a group. So the idea is to test your confidence level and your tolerance in the group. So Always seek an opportunity to Initiate the GD and take a stand. Provide examples and take it to a new tangent. And View it with all possible perspective.

Nipun - how to answer to the question why MBA?

Raj Joshi: IMS India - take a look at one what are you currently doing? And what is expected from you? What does the industry need from you? And how will you contribute to the same? This will answer your question for Why MBA?

Chanda - is it harmful if you simplify things while in a GD. Or is it preferable to go in depth into topics?

Raj Joshi: IMS India - we need not go into the depth of the topic however proper analysis and info is required. We need to get a chance to either start a GD or if not them try and conclude based on what has been discussed.

Chanda - sir, can you tell me what the crucial role of English in GD is?

Raj Joshi: IMS India - you need not use robust words or high vocabulary main idea here is to convey your thought process.

Debomita - hello sir, I would like to know about initiating a GD? How do we address the members of our group, should they be referred by their respective names?

Raj Joshi: IMS India - Please avoid that as it will turn too irritating to use names all the time. If you wish maybe just 2 to 3 time not more than that.

Nipun - sir in GD every one keeps on adding their points, so how to enter into GD when all are speaking?

Raj Joshi: IMS India - please ensure that you have a valid point to make give examples and take it to new angle.

Raj Joshi: IMS India - I want to share a topic of GD with you all. This was asked in IIM GD - RED and BLUE. Now what can you think in the above topic?

Arpit - red is for danger blue is the colour of sky.

Sumit - red shows aggressiveness while the blues shows deep thoughts.

Raj Joshi: IMS India - One might think of Pepsi and Coke and then discuss. One can also think of red for girls and Blue for boys. In most associations.

Arpit - Pepsi and Coke are one of the biggest multinational brands and have demand in all over the world.

Raj Joshi: IMS India - good going Arpit and Sumit. Here's another topic to share with you. Again it was a topic given in an IIM GD -  . (DOT) was given to discuss? What will you think?

Sumit - it shows the center of earth.

Debomita - DOT would be a starting point.

Arpit - dot is place in typing URL address of every site.

Nipun - dot means something to end up.

Chanda - dot is that which indicate the beginning.

Raj Joshi: IMS India - Good going everyone! Now please get familiar with abstract topics. I'm giving you a few here to think about - Grass is always green on the other side. Stars and stripes. Does India need Dictatorship? How does Democracy compare with dictator ship?

Nipun - Sir where can we better prepare ourselves with material for GD. Are there any books or journals we can look at.

Raj Joshi: IMS India - You can work with magazines like HBR and log on to websites like www.hbr.com, www.nature.com etc. This will enhance your knowledge on many topics.

Sumit - sir can you prescribe us some magazine please?

Raj Joshi: IMS India - all business journals like HBR or Mckensy can help. It's important to know also current affairs. You could also go through topics for business and science and technology on this particular site http://knowledge.wha..

Rukmini - hello sir, I want to know what we should do if we don't have very bright ideas regarding the case in a case study.

Raj Joshi: IMS India - make points from what other have to say and convey you're thought via an example to the same.

Chanda - I don't know a lot of about economy, will it harm to me?

Raj Joshi: IMS India - you should develop the habit of reading on economy as well.

Nipun - how to conclude the GD?

Raj Joshi: IMS India - understand where the GD has taken its edge. Pause for some time and conclude what all have to say and not just what you feel... that a conclusion. Say your topic is Newspaper or News channels? If you feel its news channels and the group feels its Newspaper then conclude as today we come to conclusion that newspaper is final and say you feel its newspaper. As your stand.

Nipun - sir, please quote some more topics.

Raj Joshi: IMS India - Beauty Contest are harmful for women or our Culture? Should the Network sites be banned? Is Indian Media today Responsible? Will we ever grow out of the politics of Religion, Casteism and regionalism?

Kushagramakin - sir what are the topics most asked in GD.

Raj Joshi: IMS India - Factual, Controversial, Case Study and Abstract.

Nipun - sir, something about PI, how to impress the faculty quickly?

Raj Joshi: IMS India - PI is about you and not to impress someone. It's your data and facts asked to you. So never fear an Interview as it deal with you and only you. In a Personal Interview you don't have to constantly speak and it's up to you where and how do you want to hold the thread of PI.

Richa - what can be the expected topics for GD?

Raj Joshi: IMS India - most of the topics will relate to Current Topics or topics of last year... like Olympics, Terrorism, Politics, and others.

Debomita - sir, GD preparation books if you can suggest?

Raj Joshi: IMS India - there are a lot of books available in market. You can start with basic via Newspapers, and Journal and GD/PI book of IMS Publications can help you.

Richa - sir is it necessary I should have the in-depth knowledge about my hobby? Suppose I say writing which is 1 of mine and other is painting in which I am not trained, then what to do?

Raj Joshi: IMS India - it's your hobby that you pursue so you will have the idea about it. Don't worry. You can say as I get free time from my schedule i like to do painting and i am still a learner.

Nipun - sir how to tackle the situation if I don't know the answer of question asked in PI?

Raj Joshi: IMS India - be honest and avoid beating around the bush as it will not help.

Rukmini - sir, suppose I'm asked about my favourite subject and then a question from it and I cant answer, will I be given negative marks?

Raj Joshi: IMS India - as it's your favourite subject, its expected off you to know about it... So please brush up your favourite subject before you go?

Nipun - sir can you quote some questions asked in PI?

Raj Joshi: IMS India - Why MBA? Tell me something about yourself? What are your hobbies? What are your strengths and weakness? These are just the basic questions, however interviews can be taken to a different chord depending on what and how you answered the earlier questions.

Richa - sir nuclear agreement can also be 1 of the topics?

Raj Joshi: IMS India - Yes.

Richa - sir should we greet the interviewers separately?

Raj Joshi: IMS India - it will be a common greeting to all and can shake hands with all after the GD/PI.

Kushagramakin - sir what to tell about weakness. Examples please?

Raj Joshi: IMS India - convey your weakness and its important to tell how are you working to improve on your weakness. As you now know that it's your weakness you need to improve and tell what steps are you taking to improve?

Pinky - in GD if suppose any topic I get if I totally don't have any idea about it then what should I do? Please reply.

Raj Joshi: IMS India - don't panic just take a pause and wait till others have to start and make point from that and give example I'm sure you will rock... And please make logical statements.

Aparna - what to wear for an interview?

Raj Joshi: IMS India - wear that attire that you are most comfortable with and it should be presentable.

Nafeesha - Dear friends that's all we have time for today. Raj Sir thank you so much for taking the time out to be here with us today. It's been a pleasure having you.
