Q. Briefly tell us about the XLRI
and its success stories?
XLRI School of Business and Human Resources Jamshedpur is a premier management institute in the country was founded in 1949 in the Steel city of Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. The journey began with Father Quinn Enright and since then the Jesuit Society has nurtured the growth of XLRI in keeping its commitment to “Magis” (Excellence in Everything). XLRI providing Post Graduate Diplomas in Business Management and Personnel Management has been a pioneer. Not only in their content but in their methodologies, one can note a wide range of approached that provide for the specific needs of individuals as well as of their organizations. Over the last few decades, XLRI Jamshedpur has contributed its best to the professional growth and management of innumerable institutions that serve the public, especially organized industry, Labour, service agencies engaged in rural development, education, health and other public systems. Q. What are the courses offered under MBA channel? XLRI offers a bouquet of management courses for the students. Full Time Residential Programmes BM- Two year post graduate programme in Business Management FPM – Fellow Programme in Management (Four Years) GMP - One year general management programme for the working executives Part Time Programmes for working executives Exec PGP – Three year Executive Postgraduate programme for working executives in Dubai and Singapore Exec FPM - One year general management programme for working executives Satellite Based Part Time programme for working executives PGCBM – Post graduate Certificate in Business Management PGCHRM – Post Graduate Certificate in Human Resources Management PGCLSCM – Post graduate Certificate in Sales and Marketing Management PGCRM – Post Graduate Certificate in Retail Management. Q. Tell us about the admission process at XLRI. The admission process at XLRI comprises of the following stages: XLRI Admission test: To apply for XLRI programmes, the candidate has to appear for XAT written test. The candidates appearing for the XAT examination have to register for XAT and can apply online for the various courses at XLRI. The written test is held in 31 cities across the country for all the four programmes – BM, PMIR, FMP and GMP. Interview & Group Discussion: the shortlisted candidates are then called for a personal interview and Group Discussion. The applicant can apply for maximum three programmes and hence on clearing the written examination will be called for multiple interviews and group discussions. Also additional qualifications like relevant work experience, academic ability, extra curricular activities are an added advantage for prospective candidates. Q. What is the fee structure like? The total fee for Business Management programmes and Programme in Management & Industrial Relations is Rs. 758000 payable in six installments. While the total fees for Executive Fellow Programme in Management is Rs. 442000/- payable in 3 installments. The components of the fee structure for BM and PMIR are as follows: Admission Fee, Tuition Fee, Course Material, Infrastructure Maintenance, Computer, Library, Academic Services, Alumni Association, Insurance Mediclaim, Preparatory and outreach programme. The components of the fee structure for Executive fellow Programme in Management are as follows: Admission fee, Tuition fee, Course Material, Infrastructure Maintenance, Computer fee, Library fee, Academic Activities, Alumni association.
Q. Tell us about you faculty and alumni. We have a staff of 70 competent and professional permanent faculty with doctoral degrees from Indian and foreign universities. This faculty is supplemented by visiting faculty from other leading schools and belongs to different streams of management disciplines. The members have distinguished academic accolades and experiences to their credit and is maintains its focus to contribute to augment students knowledge and information enhancement for professional and curriculum improvement. Our students have been working in esteemed organizations all over the world. We have about approximately 500 students working in US and more than 50 in professional jobs at US universities. Q. What kind of background and profile does your institute look for in new students? A graduate in any field with a minimum 50 percent can apply for entrance for XAT, the written examination of XLRI. Additional qualifications like relevant work experience, academic ability, extra curricular activities are an added advantage for prospective candidates. Q. Is there any sector of function specific focus while targeting companies for placement? As far as placements at XLRI are concerned, we have had a considerable representation from different sectors of the industry and the focus is not restricted to a particular sector of the industry. However there is always a drive to introduce recruiters from a completely untapped industry sector to broaden the spectrum. Over the last year or so, there has been a focus on PSUs, alternative energy companies and startups in addition to the important sectors of the industry like FMCG, BFSI Institutions & Consulting that recruit from XLRI on a regular basis. Q. Does your institute offer scholarships or loans? On the basis of performance of students in various subjects and courses, we offer recognize, promote and provide financial assistance to students on meritorious grounds. We also offer need based scholarship for students. Q. Where are the branches and what are future plans for the institute? Besides Jamshedpur, XLRI also has branches in Dubai and Singapore, where the institute offers part-time MBA course for working executives. XLRI has 18 academic tie-ups with foreign universities and management schools in US, Europe, Australia and South-East Asia. The institute is working on consolidating its global presence.
