Nafeesha: Good afternoon all! On behalf of minglebox I welcome you all to this live chat on MAT prep with our experts. Our guest expert for this Afternoon is Mr.Subshashish Mitra, Vice President, Academics, PT Education. Mr. Subhashish sir, good afternoon and welcome to this chat. Please take it from here.

Dipu: how many questions should we attempt to cross the cutoff in each section?

Subhashish: There is no concept of cut-off in MAT - but as a thumb rule try for 25% in each section to get a decent sectional percentile score.

Dipu: how do we prepare for GK?

Subhashish: The MAT GK is a compendium of past 3-4 month,s newspaper articles, business, sports news, awards etc. Regular reading of magazines would help.

Vivekvoona: hi sir, to get a score of 700 in MAT, how many questions should one attempt and what should be the accuracy level?

Subhashish: For the score that you have mentioned, 120+ attempts (without GK) with at least 80-85% accuracy would be preferred.

Taurani: sir I’m good in reasoning and D,I so if I max  my score in this area and attempt less in other areas would my score be affected?

Subhashish: Even if you max your score in Reasoning, try and maintain 20-25% score in the other sections. The MAT overall score is a complex calculation - so you cannot afford to take a risk.

Divya: what should be the minimum no. of questions we should attempt to get 90%ile and above? And what should be accuracy for that?

Subhashish: At least 120 with 80-85% accuracy. That means a net score of 95-100 and a composite score of 670+

Taurani: sir what topics should we study for GK?

Subhashish: Business, Sports, important events, awards, who's who etc - for the last 5-6 months.

Dipu: should we give more time for comprehension or verbal ability or verbal reasoning? Comprehension is taking log time so it is good to go for verbal ability and reasoning??

Subhashish: The weight-age of RC is less compared to the CAT. Verbal ability questions would take lesser time. Therefore, VA makes sense. Reasoning is more direct and simple - so focus on that.

Anand: Sir......How's Amity Business School.......what's the cut off for Amity?

Subhashish: Amity Noida is a good though costly proposition. At least 90%ile.

Vivekvoona: sir I am not good in language section.. How many questions would you suggest me to attempt?

Subhashish: At least 25% of the total questions. Focus on RC - time consuming but marks guaranteed. VA - only if Vocabulary is decent enough.

Rigma: what’s the strategy for cracking GMAT?

Subhashish: There is some overlap in GMAT and CAT preparation - but the online testing is different. So, some special preparation is required.

Queena: what about DI and Quant?

Subhashish: DI and Quant would be calculation and formula based respectively. If Arithmetic and Business Math is good, you will be OK.

Anand: Sir, is IIPM a good institute or not????

Subhashish: Visit the IIPM center in your city and be a judge for yourself!

Dipu: can u tell me good colleges in Bangalore which take MAT?

Subhashish: Alliance, Christ University, MATS, INTECH etc.

Gaurav: sir please tell me that what is the standard of DI in MAT paper.

Subhashish: DI would be calculation oriented and direct. Apply all your approximation and short cut techniques.

Queena: sir what should be the focus in quant?

Subhashish: or MAT focus more on Arithmetic and Business Math.

Queena: what is in business math?

Subhashish: business math includes percentage, P&L, SI, CI etc.

Gaurav: sir are calculators allowed?

Subhashish: NO calculators!!

Astha: what is more important DI or DS for MAT?

Subhashish: DI

Gaurav: sir, do all the students have a same question paper?

Subhashish: Yes same question paper for any MAT.

Vivekvoona: sir colleges prefer composite score or overall percentile?

Subhashish: composite score.

Pranjal Urs: sir should i attempt the GK part??

Subhashish: Yes, attempt GK although its score is not calculated.

Gajendra: which are the best colleges for an Engineering graduate through MAT and what percentile is needed? And, is BIMTECH also there in MAT?

Subhashish: The top colleges under MAT would be Alliance, Christ, AMITY, BIMTECH, EMPI etc. At least 90%ile. Yes BIMTECH - for some courses

Gaurav: sir please tell me is cheating possible.

Subhashish: in India everything is possible and I mean cheating also. But, we have not recorded such an event!

Anand: Sir, how much should minimum correct attempts to get 90 percentile?

Subhashish: The least net right attempt should be of 100 to get that percentile.

Divya: sir in last September MAT 1 of my friends had attempted 55 questions only. Excluding GK but then too he got 91%ile. Does that mean more stress is on accuracy rather the no of questions?

Subhashish: would not rely too much on what friends say. They have a habit of exaggerating the truth somewhat!

Dipu: should we start from calculation part or English part?

Subhashish: which section you start from is your personal strategy. English can give you quick marks in less time - but only if you are good.

Queena: is accuracy important or attempts?

Subhashish: Both should be balanced. One without there other is meaningless.

Doni: which are the best colleges for MBA in Kerala? what is the minimum score to get admission there?

Subhashish: SCMS has two campuses and both are good.

Taurani: sir what is the marking scheme?

Subhashish: marking scheme is not declared - that means it is not stated whether there will be +4 or -1 etc. Please refer to the MAT bulletin.

Queena: and what are the topics in arithmetic, math?

Subhashish: ration, proportion, TSD, Work and Time.

Doni: sir, for getting admission in SCMS, how much we have to score?

Subhashish: a composite score of around 620 (75%ile) should be enough.

Yashovardhan: do all questions carry same marks?

Subhashish: Yes.

Anand: Sir how much is the fee structure for AMITY BUSINESS SCHOOL?

Subhashish: it would come to more than 7 lakhs - all inclusive.

Anand: Sir, what about geometry and mensuration?

Rupesh: What percentile is needed to get in Alliance college, Bangalore?

Subhashish: at least 90%ile.

Rajdyuti: which areas of DI do you think take lesser time to solve among the questions usually asked in MAT?

Subhashish: obviously GK followed by Verbal and LR.

Anurag: is qualifying in math necessary for selection?

Subhashish: Qualifying for Math is important - at least 8-10 questions.

Doni: what are the main topics to be covered in last minute preparation?

Subhashish: revise basic concepts of Mathematics, calculation tips etc, some vocabulary revision.

Rajdyuti: I asked about the data interpretation section...which types to attack 1st? Which are the 1s usually easier?

Subhashish: In DI section you will find that the questions are of a direct nature but calculation oriented. Depends on your speed. LR would be easier.

Queena: what are important topics in geometry and how much weightage is in geometry?

Subhashish: in Geometry please go through Mensuration concepts and formula. The weightage varies.

Dipu: is amity AICTE approved?

Subhashish: Amity is not AICTE approved.

Taurani; sir how is IMS Ghaziabad?

Subhashish: It’s OK.

Rupesh: Name some colleges which accepts more than 80%le in MAT, please.

Subhashish: SCMS Cochin, EMPI Delhi

Taurani: sir what is the package IMS gives?

Subhashish: IMS package you can get from website - but on an average, I would say between 3-3.5 lakhs.

Astha: is probability important?

Subhashish: probability? No

Rajdyuti: sir, with distance-time-speed, probability, permutation, time-work, ratio-proportion and people and a-m-a. Is it possible to attempt 25 questions in quant, haven’t done the rest very well.

Subhashish: forget permutation, but with the rest your target can be achieved.

Queena: is coordinate geometry important?

Subhashish: No.

Astha: sir, what are the important topics in verbal ability?

Subhashish: Vocabulary, Grammar, Para Formations etc.

Taurani: sir what about quadratic and progressions in quant?

Subhashish: Quadratic - yes, progression – No.

Queena: Is DS imp?

Subhashish: No.

Doni: is data analysis and sufficiency important? Should it be scored like math?

Subhashish: DI is important, DS is not.

Pratheesh: sir, I have read somewhere that the GK section is not included in percentile. Is it true?

Subhashish: Yes, but don’t leave it.

Rajdyuti: do analogy based questions come in MAT?

Subhashish: Yes - verbal analogies are seen.

Queena: Is aligation and mixture important?

Subhashish: I think you will take me through all the topics one by one. Look - no one can say what is important and what is not. The paper has already been set!

Dipu: I am facing a lot of problem in English. I am really weak in this section, what shall I do?

Subhashish: Try and focus on the RC section - in the short term!

Astha: is arithmetic more important than algebra for MAT?

Subhashish: Yes!

Pratheesh: are all sections jumbled or separate?

Subhashish: Since Dec 06, the paper is a jumbled paper.

Anand: Sir How's NIFT?

Subhashish: If you are interested in that field it is a good option.

Dipu: is guessing or attempting the well known question enough?

Subhashish: intelligent guess - yes! Random guess no!

Pratheesh: so it will be difficult to maintain sectional cutoffs?

Subhashish: Identify questions from a similar section and solve them at one go.

Koustuv: I have appeared Sept 08 MAT & scored 542.50 (50.86 percentile). My graduation percentage is 46%. Please tell me if I can get a good B-School with this rank.

Subhashish: B-school yes! Good B-school no. For that I would suggest that you take the MAT again and aim for a better score

Anurag: Sir, what is the percentile range accepted by top MBA colleges?

Subhashish: 80%ile and above.

Pratheesh: sir, what could be the cutoffs for Christ uni and alliance?

Subhashish: 90 %ile at least

Queena: is trigonometry an important topic in MAT?

Subhashish: NO!

Rajdyuti: sir, is it advisable to do the section am weakest in i.e., quant, in the last?

Subhashish: weakest section at the end is not advisable as you are physically and psychologically most stressed out then. Keep it in the middle somewhere

Doni: Are there cutoffs in each section?  Sir plz answer.

Subhashish: not specified - but there has to be a minimum level for the good b-schools. Let us keep that at 25%

Koustuv: Sir please tell me what things should I consider before choosing a b-school?

Subhashish: pedagogy, industry acceptance, faculty quality, infrastructure, placements etc.

Arijit: Is there any chance some good colleges will look at the GK score? And how many questions should we attempt?

Subhashish: Yes. 8-10.

Koustuv: How I shall confirm those features? Infact I am receiving too much call letters & most of them are hiding truths. It is not possible to visit all of them.

Subhashish: very dicey. But other than that, there is no other way also!

Rajdyuti: sir, then what should i do quant after? Am good at verbal and reasoning.

Subhashish: Start with the strongest area and then come to Math.

Subhashish: Verbal and LR.

Koustuv: Do you suggest studying in West Bengal?

Subhashish: Why not? There are some good colleges and one Singur does not spoil a state!

Arijit: I have prepared in the current affairs of last 4 months. Is this enough for GK?

Subhashish: Yes!

Pranavranjan: I want to take admission in west part. can u suggest me some college. Esp. Mumbai.
