Despite of economic gloom, management students of IIMs (Indian Institutes of Management) are expecting a rise of 15-20% in stipends offered by the companies during summer internships this year.

With top companies showing interest in recruiting interns despite of economic crisis, students are expecting lucrative offers. Sources from IIM-Lucknow revealed that besides regular recruiters, first time visitors are also expected to visit the campus. The stipends offered in marketing, consulting and general management sectors are likely to go up by 15-20% this year.

IIM-Ahmedabad is optimistic about a healthy summer placement drive. Students are expecting good internship offers as the institute had lucrative offers for final placements in March. Students are also hopeful that the placement season will wind up early this year as the number of domestic companies offering diverse roles to the summer interns has gone up. Students have also shown interest in taking up domestic offers.

Now days, the students preferring startups over well established brands has also shown an upward trend.

Pay packages does not appear to be a tempting factor now. Mostly students aspire to enter startups, which offer them diverse, bigger roles and give them the flexibility to contribute more to the development of the company when compared to conventional profiles offered by big brands.

Increasing demand of startups also indicates that students are interested in taking up entrepreneurship in the midst of economic slowdown. Nearly 75% IIM-Kozhikode students have shown interest in taking internships at startups. In a bid to encourage more startups in the campus, IIM-Kozhikode has decided not to charge placement fee from these companies.

Sources from IIM-Indore revealed that students know that the multinationals are hiring less and thus are more inclined to take up broader profiles in startups. The institute is in the process of approaching its alumni who have started their own ventures for assistance.

The summer placement at B-schools starts in the first week of November. XLRI Jamshedpur has also witnessed a surge in emerging sectors such as ecommerce and technology this year. However school is hopeful of only a single digit percentage increase in stipends this year.
