CAT 2012 started on a smooth note on October 11, 2012 and surprisingly it had no surprises this time. The first day paper was very much balanced and concluded without any hitches.

The paper comprised of 2 sections, each having 30 questions of total time duration 140 minutes. The section one was QA & DI and section 2 was VA/RC/LR. A 15 minute tutorial was given to the students at the beginning of the paper.

The test takers revealed that the exam was of moderate difficulty level.  The test paper pattern was similar to the practice test given on the official website of CAT. The best way would have been to first solve the easy questions given in the QA section, then move to DI and again come back to QA for attempting the difficult questions. The section one was a beautiful mix of easy and tough questions comprising of 70% QA and 30% DI. QA started with around 12 easy questions which motivated students. About 40% question in QA were direct-concept based, 30% required some easy calculations while the remaining 30% were of high level based on detailed understanding of concepts.

DI questions required intensive calculations and comprised questions on percentage decrease, percentage increase and data spotting. DI had no questions on data sufficiency. The questions were of moderate difficulty level.  

Section 2 was VA & LR which was easy and simple for those who prepared well. The reading comprehension had passages on psychology, philosophy, OB (organizational behavior) and random foreign history followed by 10 questions (3+3+4) where most of the questions were direct in one of the sets. VA was a mixed bag of 4 to 5 types of questions. It had 10 questions which were easy and simple. The paper comprised of questions on logical continuation and para-jumbles. The LR part had simple puzzles which required little time and concentration.

 On the whole paper was balanced and satisfactory for those who prepared well. The next online test is scheduled for Saturday, October 13, 2012. The exam will go on till November 6, 2012. The exam is being held in 2 slots – morning and afternoon.
