This year CAT (Common Admission Test) will witness more number of applicants appearing for the exam as compared to 2011. Over 2.10 lakh candidates have registered for CAT this year.

By the end of September 16, 2012, IIM-Kozhikode registered the sale of 2.09 lakh application brochures. Counters closed on Monday, September 17, 2012 evening and sources from IIM revealed that sale of application would cross 2.10 lakh. This year CAT will be conducted by IIm-Kozhikode.

About 2.05 lakh and 2.04 lakh aspirants registered for CAT in 2011 and 2012 respectively. In 2009 the figure stood at about 2.42 lakh. In 2008, as many as 2.76 lakh candidates had registered for the exam. However, experts believe that the number is expected to go up in coming years.

B-school heads express that the increase in the number of applicants indicates that the global economy is slowly recovering. Students are optimistic that job market will improve by the time they will graduate. So perhaps they have decided to add value to their resume by pursuing a management degree.

This year CAT will be conducted over a period of 27 days commencing from October 11 and ending on November 6, 2012. The CAT scores will be used to provide admission to 13 IIMs and around 150 other B-schools.

The pattern of the exam will remain unchanged. However the test centers will be increased as more number of candidates will take the exam this year. As per the notification, CAT will be a computer-based test divided into 2 sections of 1 hour and 10 minutes each. Each section will comprise of 30 questions including verbal ability and logical reasoning, quantitative ability and data interpretation.
