Students can now earn one of the world’s five most prestigious management degrees at IIM-C (Indian Institute of Management- Calcutta). The institute has entered into a partnership with Cems, a group of 28 B-schools of the world, which will allow it to offer a double master’s degree to selected students at the time of graduating.

Cems was previously called as Confederation of European Management Schools, but the name was changed recently when it planned to welcome top B-schools from outside Europe. Members of Cems include HEC France, London School of Economics, Essade Spain, Richard Ivy from Canada and HKUST Hong Kong. The club still does not welcome B-schools from US.

IIM-C is the first Indian business school to become a member of Cems. The deal was signed in November 2011 and it took one year to evaluate institute’s teaching, curriculum and examination methods, achievements of students and placement records.  The unique factor of IIM-C which helped it to get the membership was its emphasis on quantitative courses – those with knowledge in finance and operations management heavily depend on statistics and mathematics. Moreover, among IIMs, IIM-C is only one to owe a management center for human values.

As a Cems member, IIM-C will now be able to offer the prestigious Masters in Management Program degree, known as MIM degree all over the world to its selected students. MIM is one of the 5 best global management degrees. IIM-C is revamping its 2-year postgraduate programs so that the elite 27 students can be awarded with MIM degree at the time of passing out. Batch entering the institute in 2013 will be eligible for this new degree course.

The institute has restricted the course to 27 students only as each candidate would be taught the course module prepared by the 27 other member institutes of the club on their respective campuses. A student will be required to contribute a minimum of 75 hours of extra classroom learning apart from global projects that will have to be done in order to earn this MIM degree. This is apart from attending the IIM-C regular classes and exams.

Selection of students will be done after the first year Results are declared. Selected student would be required to attend classes for 3 months at a member B-school abroad after completing their first term of the second year at the institute and then  return to IIM-C for final examination. The second year curriculum of such students will also cover extra modules framed considering the MIM degree.

IIM-C will partner with many global companies so that students selected for Cems course will pursue their summer internship with them and present the compulsory international project.
