The increasing contractualization of jobs and complexity arising due to it may soon require a dedicated course on controlling contract labour in B-schools, specifically in industrial relations and labour law.

These were the views of a professor of personnel management and industrial relations, XLRI Jamshedpur while speaking about the labour violence at Maruti Suzuki Manesar plant and the course curriculum of business schools. XLRI Jamshedpur has re-organized national industrial relations conference in which students and faculty coordinators jointly organize two-day seminar on industrial relations issues.

The topics vary from outsourcing and contractualization of work, decreasing trade union density and collectivization to role union in growing economy, increasing dissatisfaction and its demonstration among others. Representatives of the labour union, government and employer attend the event to deliberate and debate the issues.

XLRI Jamshedpur is among the few institutes in India to offer full-fledged course on labor law and IR.

Too much focus on strategic human resource management at the cost of industrial relations is not limited to the HR-IR discipline only but can also be applied to other management streams or functional areas such as finance, marketing, economic and others due to major socio-economic-political factors that are out of people’s control. These factors include rising purchasing power, government’s economic or labour policies, changes in demographic characteristics of workforce, sociological factors such as breaking of joint family to nuclear family and other issues.

HR with an emphasis on organization development, employee management among others can be perceived as a replacement to labour union.
