IIM-Ahmedabad is grappling with acute faculty crunch. Many senior faculty members have either left the prestigious B-school to practice their own interests or have opted sabbaticals to discover green pastures elsewhere.

The number of students and management programs has increased to two times in the past 10 years but the faculty number remains the same. In 2000-01, the faculty-student ratio was 1:5 which has dropped down to 1:10. The number of students has risen up by 117% between 2000-01 and 2012-13, while the faculty strength has gone up by only about 10%.

Sources from the institute expressed that nearly 8-10 faculty members are appointed at the institute every year but attrition rate is very high.

However, the numbers indicate that attrition rate is high not only for fresh recruits but also for senior faculties who have quit their jobs to join as deans or directors at different colleges. IIM-A presently has shortage of 120 faculty members. The institute expressed that the problem is going to increase once foreign institutes commence establishing campuses in India.
