In an attempt to develop the competitive skills of students from the reserved categories, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) – Lucknow has decided to train them for the Common Admission Test (CAT). This initiative will serve as an incentive for students from the socio-economically deprived categories to dream big and also help the IIMs get quality students from these categories. 

After rigorous discussions a plan was drawn up. It was decided that in the trial phase, around 40 to 60 students from the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes categories who wish to pursue management courses will be chosen from colleges around the Lucknow area. They will be coached for two to three months by external trainers who specialize in helping students prepare for the CAT exam. As part of their social responsibility initiative, the institute will bear all the expenses. IIM – Lucknow will not have any role in selection and training of these students.

IIM – Lucknow has chosen a coaching institute to train 50 SC/ST students for CAT 2012 and for the next stage of the admission process for post graduate management programs. Initially, this project will be restricted to the Lucknow city only but students can be from anywhere in India so that the evaluation and monitoring will be easy. It might be extended to other cities next year, based on the Results and feedback received.

IIM – Lucknow officials ensured that this project would in no way guarantee admission in any of the IIMs or other business schools accepting CAT scores.
