About 2.14 lakh candidates have applied for CAT (Common Admission Test) 2012 for admission to IIMs. There has been a considerable increase in the number of female applicants registering for CAT 2012. This year as many as 28% of the total applicants are women against the 27% in 2011.

Majority of applications have been made from metro cities such as Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune. In 2011, nearly 2.05 lakh candidates had applied for CAT. This year, out of the 2.15 lakh brochures sold, 2.14 lakh aspirants finally applied for the exam. The registrations for the exam closed on September 19, 2012.

Mostly, all the applicants do not appear for the final examination with few quitting the race.

The registration process ended smoothly. Sources from IIM Kozhikode expressed that rise in application numbers is a positive sign that the management programs offered by the IIMs and other B-schools that accept CAT score are regaining their popularity.

This year CAT will be held from October 11 to November 6, 2012.
