Advertising is a service industry geared towards the communication of information and ideas to and on behalf of others. It is the main arm of marketing, involved in the communication of information and ideas to optimize sales or levels of awareness. Advertising is not an end in itself but a means to build a relationship between the product and the consumer.
Eligibility for most of the advertising postgraduate courses is graduation in any discipline with a minimum of 50 percent marks. Admission to most of these courses is based on an entrance exam and/or interview. Some colleges also offer BA courses in advertising, for which they need students who have cleared class XII.
Many institutions offer a general course in mass communication where advertising is one subject along with public relations and journalism. Postgraduate diploma courses in advertising are offered at a limited number of institutions in India.
The courses generally include an overview of communications with and introduction to research methods; an understanding of marketing issues; financial and creative aspects of advertising; public relations; media planning and some technical training in graphics and production.
Students work in groups on practical issues, such as problem solving or campaign development, and are expected to submit a project of their choice for evaluation at the end of the course.

An ideal person for an advertising job should be a good communicator, creative and should possess the ability to handle work pressures. One can either join an advertising agency or can join a production house to learn the knack of this field. An advertising agency generally has a client service division, copywriters and art directors.
Career opportunities in advertising include openings in private advertising agencies; advertising department in private or public sector companies; in advertising sections of newspapers, journals, magazines; commercial section of radio or television; market research organizations etc. One can get to learn everything from scratch.
A client service person gets to meet and understand the requirements of an array of clients. As a copywriter and graphic designer one gets to explore ones creativity to the fullest. Teamwork, motivation and dedication are the key factors that youngsters can learn at an early age.
The salary structure is quite decent. One can start off at a junior level and then work towards reaching the top. Most advertising agencies take fresh graduates as interns for which they pay anything between Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000 as stipend. The salaries at the starting level range from Rs. 12,000 to Rs. 20,000 per month. As you grow in the agency the salaries can shoot up to Rs. 40,000 and above per month.
