Hospital Management as a career has taken a front seat for many professionals. A hospital manager’s job is challenging and replete with responsibilities. The past account advocates that a senior doctor was generally assigned the role of a hospital manager. But with time a new career dimension has evolved in this field. Specialized professionals are required to look after the managerial affairs of a hospital. The profession has undergone manifold changes and many categories have been chalked out unfolding more employment opportunities.

As we have ordinary to specialty hospitals that render different kind of services to the number of people they cater to. As a natural consequence, several courses and training programmes have been evolved to churn out professional hospital mangers and give the veteran doctors a breathing space.

For undergraduates there is a three-year degree course like Bachelor of Hospital Administration (BHA). The applicants should have completed their 10+2 with biology. For BHA the minimum requirement is 50 per cent marks at higher secondary level. There are postgraduate courses, i.e. Masters in Hospital Administration (MHA) which is a two-year’s programme. The postgraduate course is available for both medical and non-medical students.

For making a career in Hospital Administration the individual may be from medical or non-medical background. Pre-requisite for career in hospital administration is graduation (medical/non-medical) and a degree/diploma in Hospital Administration.  For Indian Institute of modern management, Pune the candidate applying for this course should be a graduate from any university in any discipline.

Skills and Aptitude:-

The patients often faces delay in getting services at the front office, doctor chambers, pharmacy and laboratories in a hospital. The waiting period can also be made little more comfortable. Patients need an assurance as to how much time it will take and would somebody inform them when their turn comes.

At the time of the discharge of a patient there is invariably delay in getting the discharge summary and final bill. This needs coordination among various departments, which can be facilitated by the hospital management professionals. The hospital managers can streamline the workflow and activities in these departments.
