Dental Education Technology to offer course on teaching skills
In a bid to improve the teaching skills in dental colleges, VSPM Dental College has integrated all its running projects under DET (Dental Education Technology) becoming the first in Vidharbha and only the third college in Maharashtra to opt for the course. The DET was inaugurated in July by MUHS (Maharashtra University of Health Sciences) vice-chancellor and will organize the first 3-day fundamental course in DET between August 28 and 30, 2012.
The course aims at imparting teaching skills among faculties to improve the teaching standards. Problems such as using information technology for teaching, stress among dental students, improved teacher-student relationship are few topics to be considered for discussion. 5 dental colleges from Vidharbha will participate. The findings will then be introduced by the colleges taking part. The objective is to replace rote learning practice by competency based and problem-based learning. This will be achieved by giving students more clinical exposure.
Many faculties from the college were involved in their own projects since long. Majority of these projects are feedback driven which were taken from the students on various issues. Process such as simulation learning and e-learning will contribute in improving learning. This will later become the part of the courseware.
The teachers will discuss the overall personal development of students apart from education techniques. The topics of discussion also include factors inducing stress among students such as insecurity, fear of failure and peer pressure. These issues will be addressed by faculties from psychiatry department of the college.
Imphal to get a dental college soon
The Dental College of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences at Imphal will be inaugurated soon as the Central government has approved it. The academic session is expected to begin from August 1, 2012.
The college has a total intake capacity of 50 students each year from northeastern States except Assam. As Manipur is the host State, it is likely to get ample number of seats. Some seats are blocked for RIMS employees’ children also.
