The single national level common entrance exam proposed for MBBS and MD courses will commence from 2013-14.
The health ministry officials have notified MPs that NEET-UG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Undergraduate) and NEET-PG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Post Graduate) exams will commence from next academic year. The commencement for the common entrance exams for admission to MBBS and MD courses from 2013-14 was notified on February 25, 2012.
The NEET-UG exam will be conducted by CBSE and NEET-PG would be carried out by NBE (National Board of Examinations). The single entrance test was proposed to relieve the students from the pressure of taking multiple entrance tests and improve merit in admission process.
The government proposed the Bachelor of Rural Healthcare Course to overcome the crunch of doctors in rural areas and prepare remote healthcare team to cure common ailments and not all diseases requiring specializations.
However the course has been opposed by medical professionals and is under the standing committee on health in Parliament for consideration. The Indian Medical Association too has opposed the course as it states that the course would give rise to different levels of public health delivery for rural and urban populations.
