New NIA Pune Director plans to place NIASOM amongst India’s top-10 b- schools
Dr. Prathap Oburai, former faculty at IIM Ahmedabad, took over as Director of National Insurance Academy (NIA), Pune. He replaces Prof KC Mishra, who completed his tenure as NIA chief recently. In keeping with the growth of the industry's needs, NIA is likely to be on high-growth and expansion trajectory for the next 5-10 years. Mr Oburai said, “I think that NIASOM could easily compete for a top-10 ranking in the business school rankings exercises conducted in India.” Currently, NIA's application for deemed university status is being processed by the Ministry of HRD, informed Dr Oberoi.

NIASOM (School of Management) has been running the two-year full-time MBA program since 2004. “Four batches have already graduated from the business school and the current batch size is 75,” Dr. Oburai said, “The MBA program was started by companies engaged in the life and general insurance sector for training their executives, but it has now grown into a premier national-level business school in insurance training, research and education.” The new Director of NIA further said, “We run more than 200 short-duration executive education programs. Since insurance and risk coverage is needed by many sectors we cover some sectors including the Oil & Gas sector and many more.
