Anna University, Chennai is all set to roll out a new engineering syllabus for its 500 self financing colleges. A panel of 240 faculty members of Anna University coordinated by the academic course director is working to implement the new syllabus.

In last 2 years, this is the second time when university has changed the syllabus. The first time it was changed in 2011, when DTE (directorate of technical education) directed colleges affiliated to each of the 5 Anna Universities of Technology (AUT) to introduce R-2008 instead of that approved by AUT.

Sources from Anna University revealed that regular upgradation of syllabus help the university to keep pace with the latest technology and to fill the industry requirements. The other constituent college of Anna University - Alagappa College of Technology, Guindy College of Engineering and Madras Institute of Technology follow R-2009 which is tougher than the one approved for affiliated colleges. It will be upgraded next year.

As only a few weeks are for the new session to begin, there will only be 10% change in the syllabus. The colleges may add a couple of electives suggested by the industry.

The change in syllabus was met with mixed reactions. Faculty members of the university are happy. Few believe that colleges should be given freedom to choose their own curriculum depending on the region.

This is also the second time when 500 engineering institutes will follow the same academic calendar. All Anna University, Chennai and AUTs will have same dates for opening and closing their semesters, practicals and exams.
