Indians ranked No.2 for educational queries on Google
Google has ranked India at number two in the world after the US for online search queries related to educational institutes and courses. As per the study, which was released by Google on Wednesday, August 8, 2012, more than 60% Indians use online sources to research on education.
The study was conducted between January 2011 and June 2012 and covered titled students on the internet. The survey reveals that India witnessed 46% year on year growth in educational searches on Google. Of this 40% queries were related to higher education courses. There has been a year on year growth of 135% in the use of mobiles to send queries contributing 22% of the total educational searches.
India has over 60 million internet users in the age group of 18-35 and Google is witnessing a surge of education related queries from them. The main objective of the study was to know the effect of internet on the young population with respect to educational decision making.
Although a range of courses are available, Indian students prefer conventional ones with IT/vocational courses having a maximum hits (44%) followed by engineering (40%) and management (16%).
Students prefer those courses which promise them a good job. IT and Engineering are most popular ones as students choose bifocal subjects such as computer science in Class XII itself. Many students now prefer to enroll in management courses after graduation.
The study comprised of Google search query patterns and offline research by TNS Australia. As per the offline survey which was held in 7 cities, including Delhi, Ahmedabad and Mumbai, 56% students expressed that job placement is the foremost and primary criteria for choosing a college or course. Other parameters followed faculty (49%), course content (48%), reputation of the institute (43%) and fees (41%). The survey also revealed that before deciding a college and a course, students’ research for 5-6 months on an average.
