Medical Lab Technician

The job of a Medical Laboratory technician is testing blood samples, tissues, and other fluids of the body in order to help the doctor in the diagnosing and treatment of certain diseases. The tests that lab techs conduct are to help the doctor in verifying the causes of an illness, taking decisions regarding the treatment.

The various areas are those concerned with:

  • Microbiology
  • Haematology
  • Blood Banking
  • Immunology
  • Clinical Chemistry
  • Molecular Biology
  • Cytotechnologist

Their duties include setting up, cleaning and sanitizing laboratories and getting them ready to perform tests. Lab technicians prepare samples, match blood samples, for transfusions, analyze fluid content, collect blood samples and examine immune system elements. They are expected to handle sophisticated equipment.

Eligibility for becoming a Lab technician is a 10+2 in science subjects from a recognized board. He is now eligible to join a course in DMLT or Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology. This is a two year diploma course. There are other courses too and they all require a 1+2 as the basic eligibility criteria. These courses are offered in hospitals, colleges and universities. But the colleges and hospitals should be authorised by and affiliated to universities.

Apart from the course the other most important qualification for a lab technician is the ability to work with concentration in a lab. Because he is responsible for the accuracy of tests the Results shown by him can cost a patient his life and a doctor his job. So a lab technician should be dedicated and should work with complete concentration. He should be alert because he has to make arrangements for blood supplies during emergencies in addition he has to accurately test blood samples for compatibility to the patient’s blood a small error and again it’s the patient’s life at stake and the physician’s reputation too.

Next he should be very careful while handling equipments he should be able to finish his work with accuracy and within the stipulated time limit as precision is also very important. He should be able to analyse the Results, interpret scientific and technical data and be computer savvy too. He should have an eye for detail and should be a hard worker because in cases of emergency he may be required to work round the clock or at odd hours.

There is a certain degree of health hazard involved too and for this they should be able to exercise special care because the samples etc can be of the infectious kind so they have be very cautious as they may infect themselves  too.  Interested in a Lab Technician’s Job!
