According to All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) survey, more than 60% of the total engineering students graduating every year remain unemployed. The survey also mentioned that around eight lakh engineers that graduate every year from the technical Institutes across the country.
Not even 1% of engineering students enroll in summer internships and mere 15% of engineering programs offered by various institutes across the country are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA).
To cope up with the situation, the ministry of human resource development is planning for a renovation in India's technical education.
The ministry will introduce National Entrance Examination for Technical Institutions (NEETI) for admission to engineering programs from January 2018, linking annual teacher training as a must for approval of the institution, mandatory induction training to enrolled students and annual revision of curriculum.
According to a senior MHRD official, NEETI will be the first exam to be conducted by the National Testing Service (NTS) and it will be a computer-based exam. "In all probability, NTS will be ready by January 2018 to conduct the NEETI. The exams will be conducted multiple times in a year" .
As of now, the exam is likely to be scheduled for December 2017-January 2018, followed by another one in March 2018 and the third in May 2018. NTS will also conduct entrance test for IIT added the official.
NTS will be solely conducting these exams. AICTE has also set broad targets for raising the standards of technical education, which includes immediate improvement of employability to 60% from the current 40%, and to ensure that 75% of the students get industry exposure in the form of summer internships.
50% of the programs in the technical institutions shall be accredited through NBA before 2022.the selection process will be based on the single entrance test authorized by MHRD.
The institutions are directed to make best possible changes curriculum every year until the month of December and AICTE has asked the institutions to enact on the following before June 2017.
