Breaking all traditions, the Tamil Nadu government announced that there is will no ranking system for standard X and XII board exams. This initiative is to promote healthy competitions among students.
Today is the declarations of the 12th standard Results and this initiative by the Tamil Nadu government brings a big relief to students, parents and schools. School education minister K A Sengottaiyan made the announcement soon after a high level meeting with the education department officials on Thursday afternoon May 11, 2017. “Ranking is a way of discriminating students causing a lot of mental agony and stress for students. A GO has been issued regarding the same said the minister, he also expressed hope that this announcement will be welcomed by students, parents and schools.
So from this year there will be no announcements of the first three ranks for Class X and Class XII Results. The government is following the CBSE footsteps of no ranking system. The Tamil Nadu Students’ Parents Welfare Association has welcomes this announcement saying it would help ease pressure on children and parents. State president of the association, S Arumainathan said “it will be a relief both to parents and students and we are happy about this change in the ranking system”.
The Tamil Nadu Education Department Officials further said that ‘education is not merely writing an exam, and only the students who get top marks would celebrate. This announcement reiterates equality among students and this will help treat all students equal both from the government and private schools’.
R Vishalakshi, president of Private Schools Association, said ‘this move will create healthy competition, for the past 10 years schools have been marketing based on the ranking system. But this initiative will lead schools towards healthy competition and quality education rather than mark-based education’.
The main agenda of the committee meeting on Thursday was to discuss on the revision of the state board syllabus. Many suggestions and feedback were given and the same has been presented to the chief minister. The minister also announced that the government is working on a scholarship scheme for Tamil medium students.
