About Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences:

Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS), Vijayawada was established in 1986, as the first University of Health Sciences in the State after a number of committees had given their recommendations for doing so. The Andhra Pradesh University of Health Sciences was established by the Act 6 of the Andhra Pradesh Legislature. It was inaugurated in 9th April, 1986 by the then Chief Minister, late Sri N. T. Rama Rao. However, the University officially started its operations at Vijayawada from 1st November, 1986.

The State government of Andhra Pradesh rechristened the University in 1998 and it was named after its founder Sri N. T. Rama Rao. This medical institute of India started operating as the Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences, Andhra Pradesh from 2nd February, 1998. The principal objectives of Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS), Vijayawada was to improve the standards of medical education, including research. This is done by conducting a common entrance examination to the courses in all the institutions affiliated thereto.
