Prime Minister's Fellowship Scheme for Doctoral Research

S Jaipal Reddy, Union minister for science and technology has announced the Prime Minister's Fellowship Scheme for doctoral research. The fellowship scheme was launched at the AICTE-CII Industry Congress 2012 and the fourth Global Higher Education Summit.

The duration of the fellowships is 4 years and each year 100 fellowships will be awarded to the candidates. The research areas include technology, science, engineering, medicine and agriculture. The industry and government will jointly fund the Scholarships. These fellowships will be awarded to PhD scholars for pursuing projects which can be used in industries and are of practical relevance.

Private players should invest more in R&D and collaborate with research institutes to bring innovations which can solve national issues.

Reddy emphasized that Indian industries need advanced technologies which could equip them with intellectual properties along with commercialization potentials.  Today the industries are seeking technologies which can be commercialized. There is a huge gap of coordination between industry and academia. Our country needs to develop an ecosystem which promotes Research and Development and innovation. Educational institutes should focus equally on understanding as well as applying the knowledge. Large numbers of untapped opportunities are available in the market which can be transformed into asset for the country.
