Australian employers report lack of English proficiency in overseas students
A new research conducted in Australia by the University of Technology, has found that international students who have only the basic comprehension of English have less chances of graduating with the level required by employers. This study funded by the IELTS, Australia was conducted on 40 foreign students, of which, only two had managed to obtain the IELTS level of 7.0 that is demanded by the employers in Australia. 6 students scored less than the minimum score required. It was earlier thought that non-English speaking overseas students will catch up with the level of skills required in English and would be ready for employment. However, the study proved otherwise.
Sources from the heads of the researchsaid that educational institutions and universities have to put in more effort to help international students upgrade their skills in English language. Overseas students should be made aware of the standard of English required in the IELTS levels and for employment, skilled migration visa, or professional registration.
Sources also stated that proficiency in English will give international students a larger scope in their careers. Many companies have started to recognize that international students need training in English in order to meet the standards required by the company. They suggested the foreign students should mingle more with English speakers and should participate in English tuition programs.
