Harvard University

When one thinks of the American dream, it's easy to picture a yuppie, fresh out of an Ivy League University (read as Harvard) with the world at his or her feet! Oh! And yeah! Opal Mehta's trials to get into Harvard seem to make it look like a great place to be in!

And it is. Harvard has been, consistently, one of the best Universities in the world. The Law programme is probably the best known and is closely followed by the Management programme. There are other schools that also offer some of the best education in their fields. There is Radcliffe, which is Harvard's liberal arts college for women, the John F. Kennedy School of Government and the Harvard School of Design among others that are renowned in their selected fields.

Here, like any other high ranking University, you'll find courses that range right from Accounting and Management to Women's Studies in Religion. There are a whole lot of courses in between these alphabetical extremities and some of those are the Environmental Law, Genetics, Microbiology and even a programme of Sanskrit and Indian Studies!

The admission procedure is all handled by the individual schools and most of the necessary information is available online. Harvard University admits Undergrad students, Postgrad students, students continuing  education, professional education and students opting for Summer Schooling. Harvard University has multiple provisions for online applications to the schools and also provides contact numbers and postal addresses for admission purposes. Financial aid is also available to international students. "All of Harvard's financial aid is awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need - there are no academic, athletic or merit-based awards" is what the Harvard website says. Forms and deadlines for the same are available online.

The University boasts of excellent facilities for the students, with on campus museums and libraries. The accommodation for students is mostly on campus. 12 Houses accommodate most of the students on campus itself. These are presided over by a senior faculty member and a dean who guide the students' lives both, academically as well as socially. However it is always possible to arrange for accommodation close to campus as the Harvard Houses are easily filled up. In fact, for the next two academic years, 2008-09 and 2009-10, no more students can be accommodated in the Houses!

Most of the students of Harvard have gone on to carve a niche for themselves in their fields, but some of the more famous ones are Matt Damon, Robert Frost and Kareena Kapoor (who attended Summer School at Harvard) though there are plenty more.
