London School of Economics

Now who hasn’t heard of The London School of Economics (LSE)? It is like the JNU of the United Kingdom and we all know how tough it is to get into JNU. LSE is essentially a specialist college focusing on economics (obviously) and political science. What’s better that studying in one of the colleges that’s part of the prestigious Golden Triangle which consists of the University of Cambridge and Oxford along with the University of London. So what’s so special about LSE? Cambridge and Oxford are considered to be in the league of Harvard but University of London?

It offers a unique opportunity to study the social sciences. It has more than good reputation and is recognized worldwide. They claim that their motto is to understand the causes of things and that’s how their teaching methods are structured. They question EVERYTHING. Your ideas, other people’s ideas, critics’ ideas, even the professor’s ideas! Now that’s something you don’t see in the Indian education system, even at college level! Sigh, I wish I could study at such a highly credited institution… But the best part about an institution like LSE that specializes in something that is considered drab, boring and theoretical as economics and social sciences, they go that extra mile to make sure that what they are teaching is practical and of relevance to the present world.
It is one of the only two British universities to teach science courses though it’s a specialist university for research and teaching of social studies and economics, which is quite a feat for such an institution. Students are compulsorily made to take an extra course outside their area of specialization to promote broader interests in the social sciences and since all of them are related in some way, it actually helps doing another course.

The admission procedure to LSE is like the waiting list system here. Applications start pouring in and soon evaluation starts. Interviews are conducted and there are three possible outcomes, one can be accepted, rejected or be put on a waiting list. There are no deadlines or anything they keep allocating seats till all of them run out  so the ones who deserve it get it.  Simple. So work hard if you are planning to go there and it’ll probably be the best place to be.
