Every region in the world has had great universities an centres for learning which have consistently been successful making a genius out of an intelligent student. But very rarely does one find an institute preferred by geniuses themselves!
The Masachusetts Institute of Technology was founded back in 1861 to help create workforce in a rapidly industrializing country - The United States. Emphasizing on practical application and laboratory instruction, the institute was primarily a place to pursue anything related to the physical sciences. With it's growing number of courses and popularity, the MIT has expanded into the field of Arts, Management, and political sciences. Offering varied courses through it five schools, students can opt to pursue Science, Engineering, Architecture and Planning, Management, Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. Formed as a collaboration between the Harvard university and the MIT in 1970, the Whitaker College of Health Sciences and Technology offers courses and Biomedical Engineering and also physician-scientist training programs. From Mechanical, Material Science, Chemical, Biological, Nuclear Science and Ocean Engineering to courses in Anthropology, Foreign Languages and Literatures, History, Literature, Music and Theater Arts,Writing and Humanistic Studies, the MIT has dozens of Advanced courses, professional courses and mid career courses apart from the many custom programs. ![]() MIT
is not all about academics and studies. Staying true to it's image of
being an internationally renowned institute, the MIT has hundreds of
student activity groups including radio stations, newspapers and
competitions. It also boasts of a four week long term called the
Independent Activities Period which offers hundreds of optional
classes, lectures, demonstrations and many activities - from hacking,
to practical jokes! Students at MIT have also excelled in sports, having won honors at the national level in pistol, taekwondo, track and field, swimming and diving, cross country, crew, fencing, and water polo championships. In 2002, athletics at MIT received a shot in the arm with the opening of Zesiger sports and fitness center. Boasting of an Olympic-class swimming pool, international-scale squash courts, and a two-story fitness center, the 124,000 square-foot facility in a boon to students inclined towards sports. Amazingly, the MIT offers lecture videos and notes for almost 1800 of it's courses absolutely free through the MIT OPEN COURSEWARE website. Students don't even have to register to access the content! This works out through a donation program and corporate sponsors. However, MIT does not offer certificates to avid online learners. Being a premier institute, courses at MIT may cost a student an average of 12 lacs anually for undergraduate programs. Fees for the short term courses differ from one to another. However, the institute does offer scholarships and financial aid to students. Students have the liberty to work during summer breaks to pay off their loans etc. MIT facilitates this through a portal for prospective employers and interested students. MIT offers accommodation to students for the duration of the course at an extra price. Short term visitors are put up in one of the many Motels, guest houses etc. The MIT boasts of 26 Nobel Laureates and 37 Rhodes scholars in it's alumni! Many of the alumni have founded companies like Intel, McDonnell Douglas, Texas Instruments, 3Com, Qualcomm, Bose, Raytheon, Koch Industries, Rockwell International and Genentech. Believe it or not, a 1997 study claimed that the combined revenues of companies founded by MIT affiliates would make it the twenty-fourth largest economy in the world!! With an aim to advance knowledge and to educate students in science and technology, the MIT is definitely one of the best places to get educated in the world!
