Oxford University
If ever there was a
University that can be said to have successfully usurped the
definition of perfect education, it is, most definitely, Oxford.
The Oxford University possibly THE most prestigious university the world over and is most certainly the (or one of the) oldest universities in the English speaking world. Being around since the late 12th century has given the university a head start in the race for excellence. The University has 39 independent colleges and halls and boasts of students of a wide number of nationalities. With courses offered in almost every possible field, prospective students at Oxford have no dearth of educational avenues opening up for them. You have departments ranging from the Institute of Accelerator Science to a department of Yiddish and Zoology. The only letter if the English alphabet that does not supply a department is the letter "X" and so I won't go into all the details! So choose your course well! With an influx of students from all over the world and from widely diverse walks of life, there are plenty of means to student funding and finance. Scholarships, including the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship, are available to deserving students who wish to "study to the highest level and stretch their minds" as said by a Second Year Undergraduate of Mathematics. Though obtaining funding and scholarships for undergraduate studies is harder than that for Postgraduate courses.
The accommodation for
students depends on the kind of student you are and I mean
this academically. It's almost like they're discouraging
undergrad students by making accommodation an affair that you
must sort out yourself. Students applying for a second BA and
other postgrad degrees find it easier to find accommodation
that is under the Univ and/or in the Oxford City Centre.
Basically all the individual colleges under the University
handle the hostel accommodations for the students. The Land
Agents's and Accommodation office handles applications for
lodging for a large number of needs.
There have been many celebrity alumni of Oxford University and it's long history only makes that list a formidable one. With authors and prime ministers, actors and saints, Oxford has it's fingers in every kind of pie, pudding, souffle...and a whole lot more! Scientists like Stephen Hawking and Tim Berners-Lee (co-founder of the Internet), media tycoon Richard Murdoch, leader of Myanmar's movement for democracy Aung San Suu Ky, Pakistani cricketer and politician Imran Khan and a long list of others, all come under the Oxford University Alumni category. It's THE place to study for curricular and extra-curricular activities and there's a lot more to discover and know about it. The net is one of the best places to look with Wikipedia and the official Oxford website being of particular help. Else, you can always trust the British Council for a prospectus! Happy learning!
