India, China to account for 40% of the total university graduates in 2020, OECD claims

The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in a new education report has made a remarkable statement that India and China will account for 40% of the over 200 million university graduates between 25 to 34 years by 2020.

European Union countries and United States are expected to contribute only a quarter of tertiary degree holders in G20 countries and OECD.

China will contribute about 29% degree holders in 2020, which is five times that of past decades, while India will account for 12 and the US for 11%.

The report submitted by Education Focus Series indicates the achievements of emerging economies such as India and China and other non-OECD countries in higher education since 2000.

The well known developing countries have reached the level of developed countries in terms of university graduates by steadily moving their focus from mass production jobs to knowledge oriented work.

Sources from OECD revealed, if this tendency follows, the number of youth people aged between 25 and 34 years from Brazil, India, Argentina, China, the Russian Federation, Indonesia, South Africa and Saudi Arabia with degrees in higher studies will be nearly 40% above than the number from all OECD countries by 2020.

The US has witnessed a drastic fall from 17% in 2000 to 14% in 2010 and is expected to reach 11% in 2020.

OECD also inferred that between the year 1998 and 2008, employment in science and technology increased at a higher rate in both developing and developed countries than total employment.
