The German government has brought good news to international students with the announcement of a new act allowing international students to work for longer duration in the country while pursuing higher education. International students can now take up odd jobs for 120 days instead of just 90 days like in the previous years. As far as employment after graduation is concerned, the threshold of staying back in the country has also been increased by the government.  International students can now remain in Germany for 18 months as against the 12 months that was permitted earlier.

German Consulate General, Dr Stefan Weckbach stated, this legislature was based on European Union Directives to promote the employment of foreign students in Germany. He expressed that Germany lacks a young work force. Diminishing of certain threshold and Liberalization of the restricted rules will allow young skilled work force to work in the country.  Adding to the statement, he said, students will no longer have to get consent from the German Federal Employment Agency to work for the allowed period. This will make it easy for them to get Permits for settlements and residence rights soon after two years.

He also expressed that India is second to China when it comes to the number of students studying in the country. The number of Indian students going to Germany for higher education has increased by 25 percent from 2011. There are about 5,500 Indians studying in the country out of 1.5 lakh of foreign students in Germany. A higher education summit would be held between Germany and India near the end of 2012 to share knowledge on higher education.
