Introduction
Australia is a great place to live while you learn. The standard of living is amongst the highest in the world, while the costs are much lower when compared to other countries. Australian education has a strong international reputation for excellence. Universities offer many undergraduate and postgraduate courses covering fields such as agriculture, business, economics, education, environmental science, Engineering, health sciences, humanities and social sciences, information technology, law, mathematics and computing, medicine, science and visual/performing arts. Vocational education and training institutions offer practical, career oriented courses including business, computing, marketing, tourism and hospitality.

Applying to Australia
Application procedures differ from each university. Standard tests to take before applying to universities are IELTS and TOFEL. After submitting your application form with the required documents (universities tell you what documents you will require) the institution will assess them. If you meet the eligibility criteria, the institution will send you a letter of offer. Depending on your country of nationality and the education sector of your study you may be required to undergo a pre-visa assessment before the institution issues an Electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE). The eCoE is the only accepted evidence of enrolment for processing student visa applications. You may be required to pay tuition fees before applying for the student visa. The institution will advise you of its requirements but generally it will require payment of at least one semester of course fees.

Australia generally has two intakes i.e. February and July, with few Universities offering multiple intakes in September & November too. The following are the most sought after programs in Australia, from international students prospective.

Studying in Australia
Undergraduate study in Australia has duration of three years. Upon completion of undergraduate study, students are awarded a Bachelor's Degree, which prepares students for professional careers as well as for further postgraduate study.
  • Postgraduate study courses in Australia can be categorized in the following -
  • Graduate Certificate / Graduate Diploma courses are generally designed for specific vocational purposes.
  • Masters Degree courses usually involve two years of study after a Bachelors Degree, or one year of study after a Bachelor Honors Degree.




Entry requirements and Duration
The duration for programs like Diploma/Advanced Diploma/Associate Degree is around 1-2 years and the entry requirements would be 12 year education (10 + 2). The duration is around 1 year for Graduate Certificate/Graduate Diploma and candidate should be a Bachelors degree holder from a recognized University. Duration for Masters degree  is from 1-2 years and the candidate is required have a Bachelors degree from a recognized University with good marks. Doctoral degree program may take 2 - 5 yrs and candidate is required to have Masters degree plus a research proposal. An overall band of 6.0 is appropriate score for Australian Student visa. Students having low IELTS score can take English Language program called ELICOS.

Cost of Study in Australia
Although the tuition fees vary from one university to another, a rough estimate of the cost involved for studying in an Australian institute may be as mentioned below -
  • Bachelors Degree (Arts/Business/Law): A$ 10,000 - 13,500 a year
  • Bachelors Degree (Science & Engineering): A$ 11,000 - 16,500 a year
  • Masters/Doctoral Degree: A$ 11,000 - 18,500 a year
  • English Language Training: A$ 3,500 - 16,000 a year
  • MBA Programs: A$18, 000 - A$50 000 a year

Student Accommodation in Australia
As compared to the UK or the US, living costs are much cheaper in Australia. Living costs generally don not go beyond A$12,000 a year which includes food, clothing, entertainment, transport, travel, telephone calls and other miscellaneous costs. Australia has a range of accommodation options. With choices ranging from university accommodation or home-stay, to self-catered apartments or share houses, there's an option to suit every personality and budget as you can see -
  • On Campus: College hostels, universities provide self-catered and fully catered hostel facility for overseas students.
  • Off Campus: Renting a flat / apartment.
  • Home-stay: With the Families near the institution.

Earn while you study
International students who are studying in Australia may apply for permission to work simultaneously with their study. Application for the work visa is a fairly straight forward process. Once a work visa is granted students are allowed to work up to a maximum of 20 hours per week during semester, and full time between semesters (during holidays).In an average, students with casual jobs can expect to earn between A$12 - $15 per hour. The salary varies from person to person depending on his/her potentiality.

Health Insurance for foreign students in Australia
All the international students studying in Australia are required to have suitable health insurance for safety and security. Australia has a special system of health care cover for international students. This is called Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and you are required to have this for the duration of your student visa in Australia.
