  • Two year research degree at Macquarie aligns closely with research degrees in Europe, US and throughout Asia
  • Macquarie’s research degree programmes have a significant number of  students from prominent universities across India
  • The degree will replace the Bachelors Honours as the main pathway to the PhD and MPhil degrees.

Macquarie University will be the first Australian University to provide an integrated advanced coursework and research training degree as a key pathway to entry to a PhD degree. The new two-year Master of Research degree to be offered at Macquarie University in Sydney from 2013 aligns much more closely with research degrees in universities in Europe, the US and throughout Asia.

This degree will allow Indian students, who wish to Study in Australia to achieve a research qualification that will easily articulate into PhD studies anywhere around the world. For admission to the program, candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree from a recognised institution, at a specified level of performance. They are able to study advanced disciplinary content from a range of subject areas across the university. This will allow them to construct a program relevant to their specific interests, subject to academic approval.

The degree is modeled on the Bologna protocol which now has 47 nations as signatories. Graduates of this degree will therefore have greater international recognition for their qualifications as well as an easier path to further study overseas.

“The Master of Research will stand on its own as a high quality advanced degree for any student, and is expected to attract strong support from employers in all sectors,” Professor Jim Piper, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at Macquarie said. “It will also provide a much stronger preparation for students going on to a PhD, which they can then expect to finish in three years, keeping total time from Bachelors to Honours completion within five years. This type of research pathway is often referred to internationally as the ‘3+2+3 model’ because it incorporates a three-year undergraduate degree, followed by a two-year research masters and then a three-year doctorate.

“The new degree will also provide for much better articulation for international students and Australian students wishing to pursue PhD studies overseas, including by way of joint-PhD programs. This alignment with the international model will give confidence to other international universities that graduates have a very rigorous qualification and are well prepared for PhD level study at their institution.

Each year thousands of Indian students travel to study at Macquarie University. It is a leading research university, with 80 per cent of its research activity rated by the Australian Government as being of world standard or higher. Macquarie ranks fourth in Australia for the percentage of its research rated at the highest level, with biological, earth, environmental and physical sciences, as well as cognitive sciences and psychology all being regarded as “well above world standard”.

Macquarie also offers a special scholarship programme for Indian students through a partnership initiative with CII’s India@75 mission. Scholarships are offered to graduates across all major Indian Universities/IIT's & IIM's to undertake PhDs and engage in jointly supervised research projects, spending time at their home institution and at Macquarie, along with academic exchange across India and at Macquarie. Macquarie’s scholarship support of Indian students now totals AUD$11million (INR586,833,302.5)

The UK Times Higher Education ranked Macquarie as the top university in Australia for research citations in environmental science and ecology.

Macquarie has climbed up the Academic Rankings of World Universities, improving its position every year from 2006 to 2011.

Macquarie University has hosted over 100 cotutelle and joint PhD candidates with more than 50 universities from 26 countries, led by Germany, France, China and India. Scholarship and travel funds are provided to eligible candidates.
