Student Life in New Zealand Climate: New Zealand is in the southern hemisphere and one can enjoy the temperate climate with dry and warm summers and relatively wet winters. The warmest months in New Zealand are January and February, while March to May marks the autumn months. Winter lasts from June to August and spring runs from September to November. Culture in New Zealand: New Zealanders are known for their hospitality. They are warm and welcoming and ready to accept new cultures and tradition. New Zealand is a rich multicultural mix. Large number of migrants adds to the multiculturalism. They are relatively informal and use the first names to address people even in business. Student accommodation in New Zealand: Like in other foreign countries, New Zealand offers various student accommodation options. In most cases, the institution that you are enrolled in will help you find an accommodation. Below are a few accommodation options to choose from: Student Hostels or Residential Halls: The residential halls and hostels are usually located on the campus or nearby. Most of these have single or twin rooms with community halls for meals. These are usually located on campus or nearby. Facilities like the recreation room and labs are usually provided in hostels. A warden who lives on-site usually supervises the activities of the students. Private board or homestay: Students under the homestay option usually live with a New Zealand family in their house. Provisions for meals and other basic facilities are usually looked after by the host family. Homestay provides the students with a family environment. In addition, living with the New Zealand family will help you adjust to the new lifestyle and is a great way to improve your English skills. Renting a house or apartment: The process of renting an apartment or flat in New Zealand is referred to as ‘flatting’. Students can choose their own apartment and flat mates as per the needs. Most of the flats available are unfurnished, but basics like the oven, carpet, curtains and laundry are included in the rental properties. Paying of the bills for the electricity, phone, water and gas will be your responsibility. Tenancy Services will hold a bond of up to 4 weeks’ rent and will be refunded when you move out, if flat is still in good condition. Health Services: New Zealand provides its international students with excellent healthcare system which combines both private and public providers. Students can avail a wide range of treatments including homeopathy, naturopathy, Chinese medicine and osteopathy. Entertainment and lifestyle: New Zealanders are fun loving. If you are one of those people who love the outdoors, be sure to have a fun packed student life. You can indulge in bungy jumping, swimming, surfing etc. Cinemas, museums and art galleries are also a part of New Zealand’s entertainment sector. Summer festivals with a lot of free events are also major attractions among students. Remember to ask for student discounts for major social events that happen.
