Student Life in New Zealand

The Kiwi way of life is very simple. Even though the country might be small the people think big. The people – popularly known as Kiwis – are renowned for their hospitality and their love for sports and the outdoors.

Climate:

New Zealand is in the southern hemisphere, which makes it an ideal place of temperate climate with dry and warm summers and relatively wet winters. The warmest months in New Zealand are January and February, while the period from March to May marks the autumn months. Winter lasts from June to August and spring runs from September to November.

Culture in New Zealand:

New Zealanders are known for their hospitality. They are warm and welcoming and ready to accept new cultures and traditions. New Zealand is a rich multicultural mix. The large numbers of migrants add to its multiculturalism. They are relatively informal and use first names to address people even in business.

Student accommodation in New Zealand:

Like in other foreign countries, New Zealand offers various student accommodation options. In most cases, the institution that you are enrolled in will help you find an accommodation. Below are a few options to choose from:

  • Student hostels or residential halls:

The residential halls and hostels are usually located on campus or nearby. Most of these have single or twin rooms with community halls for meals. These are usually located on campus or nearby. Facilities like recreation rooms and labs are usually provided in hostels. A warden who lives on-site usually supervises the activities of the students.

  • Private board or homestay:

Students under the homestay option usually live with a New Zealand family in their house. Provisions for meals and other basic facilities are usually looked after by the host family. Homestay provides students with a family environment. In addition, living with a New Zealand family will help you adjust to the new lifestyle and is a great way to improve your English skills.

  • Renting a house or apartment:

The process of renting an apartment or flat in New Zealand is referred to as ‘flatting’. Students can choose their apartment and flat mates. Most available flats are unfurnished, but basics like the oven, carpet, curtains and laundry are included in the rental properties. Paying bills for electricity, phone, water and gas will be your responsibility. Tenancy Services will hold a bond of up to 4 weeks’ rent that will be refunded when you move out, if the flat is still in good condition.

Health Services:

New Zealand provides its international students with an excellent healthcare system which combines both private and public providers. Students can avail a wide range of treatments including homeopathy, naturopathy, Chinese medicine and osteopathy.

Entertainment and lifestyle:

New Zealanders are fun loving. If you are one of those people who love the outdoors, the country guarantees a fun-packed student life. You can indulge in bungee jumping, swimming, surfing etc. Cinemas, museums and art galleries are also a part of New Zealand’s entertainment sector. Summer festivals with a lot of free events are also major attractions among students. Remember to ask for student discounts for major social events that happen.

Life in New Zealand is vibrant and youthful. You are sure to carry valuable study experience back to your home country.
